MORGAN’S THOUGHTS:

There’s something that I just adore about this series.  I feel desperate for more magic like that of this world.  I’d take even more of the game of Caraval, if they would give it to me, and I cannot wait for the third book.  I don’t read fantasy frequently, but I love the magic sprinkled into this version of the real world – it comes off as extremely inventive.  This book goes a bit further into the magic than the first of the series, but I was prepared for that.

Tella and Scarlett, our two lead sisters, could not be more different.  In reviewing my thoughts of Caraval, I was reminded of how annoyed I was by Scarlett and her constant crying.  Tella is incredibly reckless, almost to a fault, acknowledging that she shouldn’t be doing something and then doing it anyway, but at least she keeps this story moving.  I’m hoping the third book in the series will be a chance for the sisters to work together – each scenario has split them up and I’m ready to see them combine forces.

Honestly, I feel this series has a little bit of everything for those dipping their toes into fantasy: a bit of romance, a bit of mythology, a bit of family drama, and a lot of magic.  And I’m now on the hunt for more stories that mix magic in with the real world, books like Harry Potter, The Night Circus, The Paper Magician, etc.  If you have any recommendations, let me know!

SYNOPSIS: (AS TOLD BY THE BACK OF THE BOOK)
